Spiralens

Spiralens is an Android camera app that turns composition into one small move at a time: tap your subject, follow the arrow, and take the photo when the golden spiral confirms the placement in green.

Open Google Play ↗Live · v0.1.1

What it does

  • Draws the golden spiral over the live camera and tracks the subject you tap, so the arrow always points the way the phone should move.
  • Checks the phone is level and, for food, products, buildings, people and pets, that the camera angle suits the subject before it shows green.
  • Offers the golden ratio grid, rule of thirds, symmetry and horizon guides, and subject presets for portraits, groups, pets, food, products, landscapes, architecture and close-ups.
  • After the shot, it reports placement and level separately and can crop the photo so the subject sits on the guide, with straightening, looks and automatic light editing.
  • Interface in ten languages.

How it works

  • Camera frames, face detection and motion sensors are processed on the phone; photos are never uploaded. Gallery copies are saved as separate files and the original is kept.
  • Free to download. The free version shows ads and puts a Spiralens mark on photos; a one-time purchase removes both.

Who it is for

People who take photos with their phone, have never learned composition, and want better framing without learning terms first.

Limits

  • Android only.
  • The golden spiral is a framing aid, not proof that a photo is beautiful; the photographer can always take the photo without waiting for green.
